Class 104s in BR Service
A collection of images featuring over 40 years of BRCW Class 104 vehicles in use on the main line from 1957 to 2000
The aim for this part of our website is to collect and display as many images as possible of Class 104 Diesel Units during their main BR career. This covers the period from introduction in 1957, through 35 years of daily service, ending in some scrap yard scenes, where 289 of the 302 vehicles ended their days. Fortunately 13 vehicles were saved for preservation, the last departing from mainline metals in June 2000. The collection, now standing at over 400, is now believed to be the largest online resource for Class 104 images; but without the generous permission given by the photographers it would be nowhere near as interesting and comprehensive. The group appreciates their permission to have their record of these trains used here.
Images added recently are highlighted yellow. Pictures of vehicles are sorted by their number, the powered vehicles being split over the first four galleries due to the number of them. Powercars are numbered 50XXX. Driving trailer vehicles and centre trailer vehicles each have their own galleries and are numbered 56XXX and 59XXX respectively.
