Class 104 Sets on Shed

Chester

M53425 (CH614) & M53466 (CH612) lined up with 108s 14.9.89 (K.Dowd)

CH606 (M53431 & M53512) takes fuel at Chester, its white roof some now looking somewhat tired 24.9.89 (K.Dowd)

CH611 (M53517/M53451) outside the sheds 3.9.89 (K.Dowd)

Old Oak Common

M53534, the morning after withdrawal inside the shed 10.5.90. Shame this vehicle wasn't saved (K.Dowd)

Ayr

During the 1980's many 104s ventured north and several received Blue & Grey livery to match other vehicles when formed into hybrid sets. SC53505 is one such vehicle seen at Ayr 10.11.85 (R.Morris)

53453 stored with accident damage at Old Oak Common 5.8.90, the depot which used the last 104's into the early 1990's, which were Network SouthEast liveried motor brakes (R.Stiles)

Longsight

A very atmospheric shot of CH616 (M53516/M53442) on the 14X road inside Longsight depot 6.12.89. Note the relatively new orange liveried 142 on the left, shiny in comparison to the work stained CH616. The dark and smokey atmosphere of many depots, almost impossible to recreate in preservation, is illustrated here (K.Dowd)

M53494/M53468 on X Shed, Longsight 6.5.89 (K.Dowd)

53521 & 53446 in 1982. This set was experimentally reduced to one engine per car, and although no other 104s were converted, other classes such as the 111s received the modification (C.Lemon)

Driving trailer M54181 dumped 6.5.89 (K.Dowd)

An unidentified vehicle stands in a similar position to M54181 (see left), in 1979 (B.Daniels)

Doncaster

Class 104s were often to be found receiving attention in Doncaster works. 53479 is seen 15.1.89 (Merlin) and 53466 during an open day 28.7.84 (J.Armistead)
